Future Filmmaking from Dave

Basking in the afterglow of good work released unto an appreciating world, I thought it would be a good idea to announce I was starting a blog. You know, add my voice to the chorus of the hive mind. One little gnat amongst the swarm of locusts.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Why Indy Filmmakers are in the dark.

Here is a recent post to the LA Producer's Group in comment on how to use projection comparable data in a film business plan:

"Most projections serve as a disservice because they are just based on comps

which don't accurately reflect the reality of a project's profitable

prospects. Saying that, if you want a more realistic tool... especially to help

with negotiations and contracts, make sure the projections includes a

sources and uses regressive analysis with proven… Continue

Is the New Superman a Hipster??

Superman has a new look, and the redrawn Man of Steel now more closely resembles a a vampiric Robert Pattinson or a sulky member of My Chemical Romance than a hunky matinee idol. He now has a decidedly more emo vibe -- pale, leaner, and brooding.

The Superhero…

IMDB vs. the Independent Film

As most of us know, IMDB is the leading source of finding professional films in this country. If you're not on IMDB, your film isn't considered professional. People look at it as a fun little project you did with no clout in the filmmaking community. But here's my question: What is considered professional?

From my own experiences with IMDB, a professional production is not one that has been showcased in a film festival or won an award. It is not based on the quality…

Of Money and Honor

You gotta sing it. “Money, money, muuuuunay.” What does it do in film and what doesn’t it do? As a film producer I rarely take on a job just for the money. So I have hard time seeing money as anything

more than a means to an end. I mean, a lot of us in the film business

are in this not so much out of choice, but out of need. We need to make films, the same way that police need to protect and serve, or the way firemen need to fight flames. Astronauts need…

My What Small Bowls You Have.

Let’s talk about craft services. During these daze of shrinking budgets you’re going to end up having to do a lot of craft service on your own. The times when you could tack it on to your catering budget

is pretty much a memory. But it’s important to treat it with the

importance it deserves. Food and how you present it to your crew

telegraphs how you regard them. So, make sure you have SMALL bowls.

That’s right. Serve your craft service up in small bowls.…

"Just" a P.A.

Not too long ago I ran into my local café to grab a cup of joe when I heard that sound come from behind me while I stood in line. “Oh hey..David. Do you remember me? We met at the blahditty blah blah.” Now I’m never rude. There are worse things in the world than being a little late to the thing I'm doing next. So I feigned recognition and pressed flesh. “Oh yeah. Of course. How ya doin?” And the guy proceeded to introduce me to his table mate who is a film maker from the neck up . The guy… Continue
