VOICES FOR FREEDOM - THE HYERS SISTERS
This colorful, award-winning documentary filled with hidden history and song, by producer-director Susheel Bibbs, tells the story of the African American singing prodigies called The Hyers Sisters. Born in Sacramento and educated in San Francisco, they became famous nationally as the first female African American opera singers, but then left opera to commission and perform the first American musicals -- These were popular works that fought against the dehumanization of their people.
