About me - current project:
Kate Lord is a photographer and filmmaker whose work focuses on women and their role within their own communities, including a small cloister of nuns in Peru, a Special Olympic Athlete attending college in Ireland and indigenous Mayan girls working towards high school graduation. She started her career working in news in print and on the web, most recently as a photo editor at The Wall Street Journal and as a multimedia producer at NBC Universal. Her short documentary films include Magho (Daughter), Race for Equality, Focused, Unbroken, and Pursuing Dreams.
Pursuing Dreams follows three young immigrants to the United States who have settled in the Bay Area with their families. Jyoti, Fatuma and Win share stories of overcoming odds and stories of survival, resilience, and cross-cultural friendships. The students, originally from Bhutan, Somalia and Myanmar, highlight moments where opportunity was unlocked and a challenge overcome.
The students overcame major obstacles to assimilate to life in the United States. Fatuma’s family fled war in Somalia to a refugee camp in Kenya where she was born. Jyoti, originally from Bhutan, lived in a camp in Nepal for 15 years. Upon coming to the U.S. from Myanmar, Win struggled at first to communicate with his classmates and teachers.
All three students and their families benefitted from programs by Refugee Transitions, a community-based nonprofit agency serving high-need, low-income refugee, asylee, and immigrant newcomers from over 50 countries. Working closely with home-based and after school tutors, all three students not only began to succeed in school, but began to see the Bay Area as home.
