A Woman Who Outlived Her Own Doctor

Jeanne Calment of France lived to the extraordinary age of 122 years — the longest verified human lifespan ever recorded. She personally knew Vincent van Gogh as a teenager and cycled until she was 100. Her doctor, who had purchased her apartment in a life estate deal expecting to outlive her, died first. She survived him by a decade.

The War That Ended After 29 Years

Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier stationed in the Philippine jungle, continued fighting World War II until 1974 — nearly three decades after Japan's surrender. Loyal to his last order, he refused to believe the war had ended. He finally laid down his arms only after his former commanding officer flew from Japan to personally relieve him of duty.

The Immortal Jellyfish

Turritopsis dohrnii, a small jellyfish found in the Mediterranean, is biologically capable of reverting to its juvenile state after reaching adulthood — effectively restarting its life cycle indefinitely. Scientists describe it as the only known animal capable of bypassing death through cellular transformation, making it, in theory, immortal.
